The 7 Things You Must Do Before Hiring A Logo Designer For Your Brand

If you are starting a business and are looking to hire a logo designer but don't know where to start, this free guide & checklist will help you be prepared to hire the right logo designer for your brand. It is important to hire the right logo designer the first time so you can avoid unwanted costs in the future. In short, the 7 things you must do are:

  • Create a realistic budget.
  • Make a list of reasons you need a new logo.
  • Plan a deadline you need your logo completed by.
  • Decide between an agency, online service, or freelancer.
  • Find your target audience.
  • Do your research on the logo design candidates.
  • Write down all the ways your new logo will be used.

So without further adue, lets dive right in to the details of each "must-do" on the list.

1. Create a realistic budget

When thinking about having a logo designed, it is very important that you have a budget set before meeting with a logo designer. You will be asked what your budget is for the project. This will allow you to make sure the designer you hire will be able to meet all your needs, and will filter out all the over or under budget logo designers so you don't waste your time.

Make sure when you are planning a budget, that it is realistic. Do not be cheap with your logo design. If you are expecting to get a professional logo for $500 with all the formats, edits, and variations, think again. Now if you are wanting to hire a freelancer or online service this may be achievable, but be cautious of inexperience or a generic graphic with a name on it from those options.

Logos can cost anywhere from $99 to $10,000+ depending on your company size, approvals needed, options you want, designer service and experience etc. We have noticed the average in Charlotte North Carolina for professional logo design is between $2,000 & $3,000. You can read more about the cost of logo design here.

Make sure to keep this factors in mind when determining a budget. Again, do not be cheap. This will cost you dearly down the road. Your logo is the most important part of your brand. Think of companies like Target, Walmart, McDonalds etc. They rely on their logo to attract customers to their business, even when they were smaller companies at the time.

2. Make a list of reasons you need a new logo

Next step is to make a list of reasons you need a new logo or an updated logo design. This will help you have certainty and confidence when moving through the design process. Ask questions like:

  • Why do I want a new logo?
  • Will a new logo improve my company image?
  • Can a logo help improve sales, followers, and engagement?
  • How much could it cost you if you do not have a logo?
  • Is my current logo outdated, a negative look, or poorly designed?

Hiring a logo designer is not always for everyone. Before making that decision be absolutely positive that you need one to improve or start your business, and not to just have something that looks nice or is in style. A pros and cons list can also help with that decision if you are still on the fence.

3. Plan a deadline you need your logo completed by

Having a deadline is important for the logo designer to plan out the steps needed to create an effective logo. It also will help you make other plans needed to start your business. Every logo designer will ask for a deadline. Make sure you do not say "anytime" or "I am not in a rush." This could cause potential communication problems with the logo designer, as they may put your project on the back burner while other important designs with deadlines are coming up.

Most deadlines for startup companies without a board of directors can range from 30 days to 90 days. If you have to report to a board or group of people it could take longer as approvals take more time. Also if you need extras like business cards, letterheads, logo mockups etc. This can also increase the time the designer needs to complete your project.

4. Decide between an agency, online service, or freelancer

Before hiring a logo designer it is very important to choose from one of the 3 categories of designers. This will highly depend on your budget and level of service or risk you are willing to take. You will need to choose from a logo design agency, an online logo design service, or a freelancer or DIY'er logo designer.

Below I have listed the pros and cons of each, as well as a general cost range you can expect to invest. I always recommend a design agency for the least amount of risk, the best service, and the best work, however depending on your situation, this may not be an option you can afford.

DIY & Freelancer

A freelance logo designer is someone who works alone from project to project, often on their free time after a 9 to 5 job. You can find freelancers who are in college, to experienced designers who need extra income. Each freelancer is different in how they price their work, and the style in which they design. You can expect to pay anywhere from $99 to $300 for a freelancer, and sometimes higher depending on if they price hourly or not.

Pros

  • You will pay a lower cost for logo design
  • They work their hours around your schedule and are flexible

Cons

  • Most freelancers are limited to a certain task. You cant add new things into the mix later on in the design process
  • Reliability is uncertain. You are risking your investment to someone who may disappear. This happens a lot in the freelance world.
  • They are strangers that may have no track record. They may not have the resources to learn todays trends, industry standards etc.
  • Your final product may not be in the right format you need for printing, web design, embroidery etc. Or if you need something adjusted in the future, they disappear.

Overall freelance designers can be a risky option. Without credibility from sources like Google My Business, or the Better Business Bureau, there may not be a track record to follow. There are however, many freelancers that do great work for a great price.

Online Design Service

Hiring an online design service may be a good option depending on your budget. Online design services use multiple designers from around the world to create a logo based on basic information about your company. There are definitely benefits to using a service like this, but there can also be downfalls (especially if you are picky). Most online logo design services can charge from $99 to $600 for a logo design.

Pros

  • If you have a lower budget, this may be a good option for you
  • You get multiple options to choose from
  • You are guaranteed to get a logo design. No disappearing designers.
  • Its usually a quicker design process than traditional logo design.

Cons

  • You most likely don't have personal service to go over design alterations, presentations, and other needed options.
  • Customer support may charge you extra to use.
  • The designs can vary widely, and are most likely generic since it is designed off of basic company information.
  • If you do not like your final design, you are stuck with it. You will have to pay again for another design.
  • Your final product may not be in the right format you need for printing, web design, embroidery etc. Or if you need something adjusted in the future, they disappear.

Overall an online design service can be a great way to get a decent logo for your business. We definitely recommend this option over a freelancer, however the option is completely up to you.

Design Agency

Hiring a design agency is highly recommended if you want a low risk solution, backed my multiple professional designers. Agencies have a strong track record and use top talent to make sure your logo design attracts new customers, an represents your company vision and goals accurately. The cost for hiring a design agency on average is $2500, but can go upwards of $10,000+ depending on the scope of work. This option is definitely worth it, but may be out of your budget. If you are looking for a cost analysis of logo design you can read our article here.

Pros

  • Very low risk, very high reward. Agencies cultivate professional designers that specialize in branding and logo design. You wont need to worry about the quality of designs.
  • An agency will dig deep into your company goals, vision, and design style to craft multiple logos based on the discovery session.
  • You are guaranteed to get a logo design. No disappearing designers.
  • A design agency will present to you multiple options, with direction of each and help you find the best one for you.
  • You get multiple adjustments, multiple logo formats for different applications, and a vector file that us used universally among printers.
  • In the future if you need an adjustment made, or a specific logo format, the agency will help sometimes at no additional cost.
  • Agencies have track records (usually great) that you can find and research.

Cons

  • Agencies tend to cost more than a freelancer or online design service.
  • Some agencies only work 9am -5pm Mon. thru Friday, so there is little flexibility. (We work 10am -10pm 7 days a week, for great flexibility)

Agencies provide peace of mind, with the confidence that you will have the perfect logo for you business that is unique and will attract customers to your company. Depending on your budget, this may or may not be the best option for you.

5. Find your target audience

When hiring a logo designer, you will most likely be asked about who your target audience is. This will help the designer pinpoint a good direction your logo will need to go in, so you can attract those customers to your business. Your target audience is your potential customers. Some questions you can ask yourself and write down answers to are:

  • What income range is your ideal customer? (high end, mid range, or cheap but high volume)
  • Are your customers more feminine or masculine or a mix of both?
  • What age range do you want as your customers?
  • What does your ideal customer like to see or purchase?

These questions and answers will help pinpoint your target audience and will be very valuable to provide to a logo designer.

6. Do your research on the logo design candidates

This is one of the most important steps. Make sure you call at least 2 other logo designers. You will often find a different experience with each. Also look at Google reviews and Facebook reviews. Do they have good credibility? How long have they been in business? Do they show samples of their past work? These are all things to look for to make sure you hire the right logo designer.

We also recommend scheduling a consultation or phone call with each designer to go over what you are looking for. Bring these 7 steps to them so they can provide you an accurate quote, time line, and proposal for their services. It is also a good idea to meet face to face to know who you will be working with.

7. Write down all the ways your new logo will be used

Lastly, write down all the ways your logo will be used. This will allow the logo designer to make your logo design fit all the specifications. Some applications for you logo may be listed below.

  • Apparel or embroidery
  • Website design
  • Business cards & other stationery
  • Social media graphics
  • 1 color or black & white versions
  • Horizontal vs. vertical
  • Digital marketing
  • Vehicle graphics

Every application you need to use your new logo with will need to be designed to accommodate. Make sure to present these to your logo designer at the initial consultation, before hiring.
